The rain hammered hard on the pavement and the cobbles of the streets, beating a guilty man on through Bath like the harpies of Hades. Onwards, and onwards he went, though his lungs were burning for air and his legs were trembling badly. It was all over, it had come to an end, he had to protect her, that was his main mission now. Knocking on the door of Lady Carstair, he was admitted by a knowing butler who informed him that the duchess had retired for the night. Racing up the stairs, Phoebus burst into his beloved's room in a terrible state and collapsed with exhaustion moaning, "She's dead! Anaxandra! She's dead!" Before fainting clean away.

Anaxandra had retired early that night, feeling queasy and not at all well, plus the baby inside her was kicking violently and making her head spin. 'Can't you give me a little pleace and quiet?' she thought as she absent-mindedly placed a hand across her stomach, now quite well-defined, and a sigh escaped her lips. The nightgown she wore did nothing to hide her state, as she sat before her dressing table and combed her long chocolate locks. It was then that she heard quick footsteps and the door bursting open. The Duchess turned around upon hearing her beloved's voice, only to see him colapse. "Phoebus!" she cried and rose with such haste that her chair fell to the floor. "Kitty! Kitty, come quick!" The companion appeared in the doorway moments later. "Madam!" she cried, "Don't you DARE try and lift sir Danton!" And she fetched two male servants to lift the unconcious Phoebus and place him into Anaxandra's bed. Once left alone with him, the Duchess sat on the edge of the mattress and stroked his cheek gently. "Phoebus...wake up..do not scare me so, my love.."

"If you think you can leave me for that glittering trollop you are mistaken!" "You are then mistaken ma'am in what you heard me say, I am leaving you. Or rather you are leaving me, pack your bags and retire to the countryside or wherever I care not!" "You cannot leave me you cannot-aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!" Phoebus woke up sweating and shaking in his clothes that were sodden from the rain, he looked around him and saw his angel bending over him, "Oh Ana! What am I going to do?" And the he turned in towards her and began sobbing onto the rounded bump of their child.

He frightened her, frightened her more than ever before. It did not help that her elder brother and father had but recently passed away, leaving her emotions in a complete jumble. But Anaxandra forced herself to remain strong and calm. For Phoebus. Gently, she stroked his hair and murmured soft words of endearment. Kitty appeared in the doorway, and the Duchess made a silent motion with her head. The companion left and returned soon after with some dry clothes from the late sir Edward's closet, before leaving again. The Duchess cupped Phoebus' face in her hands. "Shhh my darling, do not cry," she cooed, "tell me what's wrong - and you need to get out of these clothes, or you shall catch a death cold. Come now, be the brave man I know you are." Her emerald orbs were soothingly calm.

At her words, Phoebus flushed and instantly became ashamed of his tears which were nothing more than an outpouring of shock, he hastily wiped them away and sat up, tugging at his limp cravat with still trembling hands. "She's dead, Caro is dead." He said bluntly, still unable to think clearly, "I told her I was leaving her, that I wanted a divorce so that I could marry you, we had the most terrible row like none before, and then...and then...I was on my way out to see my lawyer when she followed me...she...fell...down the stairs. The next thing I knew she was dead at my feet. Her neck broken and her skull shattered- the blood still staining the carpet." He shuddered, his blue-bronze eyes wide with horror as he relived it.

Anaxandra placed a hand across her mouth in horror, her emerald orbs wide. Caro was dead? It should have been joyous news - but she had never wished for the woman who was her sworn enemy to die. Licking her lips, the Duchess stretched her hands and gently swatted Phoebus' own away, untying his cravat and then swiftly working her way through the layers of his clothing. She was silent while undoing the buttons of his shirt, before she finally asked, in a very small voice: "Did you...has her body been taken care of? What will happe now?" Her eyes looked up to Phoebus' own.

Phoebus' hands fell back to their sides, limp and as useless as a puppet without strings, he allowed her to undress him, only having the strength to do one thing at a time. "I...ah...called the doctor and explained to him what happened, Caro's body was taken away, it is up to me to arrange the funeral I suppose, and wear black when I do not wish to mourn...Caro...despite all her faults should not have died like that...and then...then I came here...as a free man, if that can ever be possible..." he muttered, staring down at his hands, he couldn't meet her gaze, it was too painfully vulnerable.

Ana stood and dumped the sodden clothes onto the carpet before returning with dry ones and helping Phoebus into them. They were perhaps slightly wider than his own - Edward wasn't as lean and muscular. The Duchess bit her lower lip. "Look at me Phoebus." And she reached out to gently lift his face so she could see his eyes. "I love you. I am here for you. You did the right thing to come here. I will tend to you, and we will get through this together. I had never wished Caro dead...never in my life. It just so happened. We cannot undo it now.." And she rested her forehead against his own, her arms wrapping themselves around him, before she muttered a low curse and moved away, one hand on her stomach. "The babe senses our sadness, and it will not let me embrace you properly," she murmured, before standing up again. "Let me get you some warm tea. You're freezing."

Now in warm clothes, Phoebus began to feel the numbness of shock leave him, her warm arms were his sanctuary and he wanted to remain in them for always. But then her bump got in the way, it was round and visible now, only very loose gowns could hide the shape of the fruit of their passionate love and he stroked it tenderly,feeling the babe move beneath his hand and gasped. But then his love was gone and he felt sickeningly empty and sank back onto the bed, feeling exhausted and the vilest creature alive, though he knew not why.

The Duchess was met halfway by Kitty who held a tray with tea. "You just saved my life you know," said the higher-ranking woman shakily. Kitty simply smiled sadly and gave the tray to her, ushering her back into her bedroom and then going to make certain no word of what transpired in the house got out of it. Anaxandra returned swiftly and closed the door behind her. Pouring Phoebus a cup of steaming tea, she sat down onto the edge of the bed and offered him the cup. "Drink, my love. It will help you. I think Kitty added some rum into it, but I cannot be certain." She rested her other hand across her stomach, her mind empty of all thoughts at the moment.

Phoebus gratefully accepted the tea and managed a weak smile at the rum comment, "Kitty is a rare marvel then!" He drank deeply, not caring that the liquid scalded his tongue, he just wanted to drink and drink and then drown in tea and sleep. When he had drained the cup, he placed it down and gently pulled Anaxandra to him, stroking her hair, her neck, her breasts and finally the stomach where their first child grew, "Where would I be without you my darling?" he murmured.

Anaxandra smiled weakly, watching Phoebus drain his cup. A sigh escaped her as she was pulled to him and she rested her cheek against his own, taking his hand and placing it gently onto her swollen stomach, allowing him to feel a rather strong kick which the babe produced, her emerald orbs smiling ever so gently. "Not in my bed, that's quite certain," she replied, trying to lift his spirits in the best way she could. She kissed his cheek gently, snuggling closer to him, her hand placed across his own. "Maybe you can help the babe go to sleep - otherwise I don't think I shall rest much tonight!"

Phoebus managed a rather forced laugh at her comment and stroked her rounded belly. He felt the kick and in that moment knew it was a boy, he couldn't explain it, but he knew it was. He looked down at her and frowned in confusion, "And how can I send our baby to sleep my love?"

Anaxandra caressed Phoebus' cheek gently before resting her own against his shoulder, evening her breathing and calming her insides down. Another kick and she winced slightly, but sighed softly and shifted in her lover's embrace. "Talk to the baby," she sad softly and looked up at Phoebus with large emerald orbs, "say that you are the father, that it's alright and you'll watch over while sleep comes." A soft smile traced her features. "The babe needs to know your voice, I think it is getting annoyed with me alone, plus you always have a calming effect on me my darling.."

Phoebus smiled softly, glad of something to do, to occupy his mind. He gently kissed his love whilst laying her baclk into the pillows and stroking her stomach soothingly before moving down to rest his head against her bump. "Hello my little one," he whispered, "this is your papa, and he loves you very much, take good care of your mama because she is very special, and I cannot wait to hold you when you are born and see whose eyes you have. I hope you have your mama's which are far prettier than mine."

Anaxandra rested back against the pillows and watched Phoebus with a look of pure adoration in her eyes. Whatever happened tomorrow did not matter, all that mattered was here and now in her bedroom with his voice soothingly floating out to the babe within her belly. A chuckle escaped her and she ruffled his golden locks. "I wish the babe has your hair," she said rather wistfully, fingering one golden lock, "mine is so dull...and whoever said my eyes are prettier than yours? I fell in love with them, remember? I think they're the most beautiful ones in the world." And she gave Phoebus one of her most brilliant smiles.

Phoebus turned his head on her stomach to look up at his darling and kissed her hand, before telling the baby that mama and papa did not often disagree but when they did, it was over complimenting each other. "The babe seems calmer now..." he yawned as he moved up and snuggled them both under the blankets, anxious about falling asleep, but knowing that he needed to in order to face the day that would dawn. But he knew he could face anything if she was beside him...

Anaxandra looked at Phoebus with adoration clearly visible in her emerald orbs, and scooted closer under the blankets, as close as her state of body would allow. She wrapped her arms around Phoebus and rearranged her position so he could rest his head against her bossom. "Sleep, my love," she said and kissed the top of his golden head, "rest. No one shall harm you while in this house. They shall have to get through me first, and before that through Kitty. And believe me, Kitty knows how to send unwanted people away. Plus, Tornado is in the stables and is in a foul mood. I think anyone could be scared of him. I will hold you while you sleep." Her voice tried to soothe him.

Her voice was a balm to his ravaged mind and he delved deeper into her warm embrace and sighed happily, inhaling her strange, sweet female scent, hoping that it would haunt his dreams. Mercifully, he was so shattered that his dreams were blank and void and he had no memory of them, not whilst his angel held him close.
