 Patience & Temperance
« Thread Started on Oct 24, 2007, 9:49pm »

The remarkably blue sky was perfectly clear, the birds were singing their merry tunes and the sun shone its lovely golden rays down upon Bath, creating a marvelous day. Temperance was in the park -- having not yet visited it, but was interested in going after hearing how agreeable it was -- with Elysia. The darling girl was terribly happy to be there, it had plenty of room for her to run around and it was flat enough that she would scarcely trip, save for over her own little feet. She squealed with joy and clapped her hands together as she ran in a circle around her mother, eventually stopping to catch her breath. Temperance chuckled at the sight and shook her head. "You poor thing. Such fun will be the death of you!" Elysia ignored her comment and cheerfully began plucking blades of grass, one by one. "You are very silly, Lissie. What are you planning on doing with that grass?" she asked, sitting herself down next to the curly haired child. "Seecrit." Elysia replied in loud whisper. "A secret? Oh, dearest, will you not tell me?" Her daughter stopped only to grin mischievously at her mother, and then resumed what she was doing. "You are very silly."

A small beagle trotted through the park, its tail wagging magnificently, and its dark brown eyes alight. Its nose managed to find places in the grass that humans didn't even realise were there, and when it found a lovely smell, its white paws began to furiously rummage through the dirt.
"Loretta, no! Come here!" At teh call of her name, the beagle stopped her movement, and looked mournfully up to her mistress. One last sorrowful look at the spot before her was spent, and then she reluctantly walked back to the large mare and her rider, her tail not as high as before, and her eyes not as bright. The chestnut mare, aptly named Chestnut, stood tall and proud, her rider sitting tall, if not so proud.
Patience climbed lightly down from her back, patting her neck as she reached down to pick up Loretta, and give the disappointed dog some fuss.
"I'm sorry, but you can't go digging holes in the park, darling!" she spoke gently, but more confidently than she would to another human - animals were so much more understanding.
"How about a game?" she asked, putting her pet back on the ground and picking up a stick from the grass. She threw it, if not very far, and immediately, Loretta went wild with joy chasing after it. Patience turned back to her horse, and began to stroke her mane, talking softly to her, completely ignoring the playful antics of her dog.
Loretta had found the pile of grass that a small child has been pulling from the ground, and immediatly stuffed her nose into it, sure that some prize should be found inside, but she only found the girl's hands.

The beagle's arrival was very sudden, but most welcome. Elysia screamed in delight and clapped her hands. "Doug!" she shrieked happily, pointing at it so her mother would take notice of the sweet dog. Elysia carefully reached out to pet the beagle's head and upon just barely touching her head, she wrinkled her nose and squealed in absolute joy. "Perhaps you shall have to have your own pup, Lissie, she seems to make you very happy." Temperance said, joining her daughter in petting the sweet beagle.

(Sorry it's so short. My muse is rather low...)

On hearing the childs delighted squeal, Patience looked around to find the mouth it had come from, and when she saw the cause of the childs happiness, she moved over at a brisk walk to make sure that the dog was nto unwelcome. She could tell that the little girl was quite happy to pet the dog, but she was not sure whether the parents or the governess would be so unobjectionable.

She smiled as she led Chestnut towards the pair sitting on the grass and looked to the woman who accompanied the child to see if the situation was agreeable. She seemed to be happy for the hcild to carry on playing with the dog, and was petting Loretta herself.
"Her name is Loretta." she told the child, in her habitual quiet voice.

Temperance looked up at the girl who seemed to be the beagle's owner and smiled. Elysia too looked at her, though much more curiously than her mother. Soon, though, she was distracted by the sweet dog. "Darling, can you say Loretta?" she asked, pointing at the dog. "Lo-tta!" She repeated happily. "Very good, Lissie!" Temperance praised, the added as the child began to pat the beagle's head a bit hard, "Now be gentle..." She turned to look at the girl again and offered her hand, "My name is Temperance McLennon. You have a very sweet dog, miss."

Patience nodded in shy agreement,
"Yes, and this little treasure certainly agrees." she smiled slightly, and then introduced herself.
"I am Patience Boscastle, it is nice to meet you." She took the proffered hand, and then looked down to the dog and the little girl. She wondered the relationship between the child and the young woman, but could not think of a suitable way to ask, so left the question unasked. Loretta soon became very engrossed playing with the small human, and her nose began to sniff her excitedly. She seemed to find the spot behind the childs ear paarticularly interesting, and went to lick her cheek.
Patience put out a hand to stop her behviour, and pushed her head away from the little girl. She didn't want her getting too excited and upsetting the girl.

Elysia scrunched her nose and closed her eyes as the dog licked her face. She giggled as she tried to push the dog away, though she didn't want Loretta to go, it was nice to be able to look at her again. She smiled up at her mother and clapped. "Doug!" she repeated, smiling and trying to pet the energetic creature. "This is my ... niece, Elysia." Temperance said, introducing the small child. She hated referring to her as her niece, and it seemed to be even harder in Bath. Everyone she had met so far was of the utmost kindness, very understanding and respectful. Though in an age of etiquette, perhaps it was simply difficult to determine the polite from those who could be trusted such a life-altering secret... "It she has fallen in love with your Loretta. I cannot say I blame her, she is simply wonderful. I will probably have to buy her a puppy just after we part or she shall never be happy again." Temperance joked.

Patience smiled down at the child - they were so much simpler than adults. They laughed when they were happy, and cried when they were sad. Patience hardly ever did either.
"She's gorgeous." she said bending down to wipe away the wetness Loretta had left behind on Elysia's face. Tickling her quickly, she stood up again.
"Well, she can come and see her any time. I would hate to see that smile disappear." She held the reins of her mare tighter as she tried to eat some of the grass. A rare grin lit up her face, as she watched the pair on the grass.

"Thank you. Sometimes I try to imagine what she will look like when is grown, but all I can be certain of is her beauty." she said, playing with one of her golden curls. Elysia giggled as Patience tickled her stomach, briefly distracted from Loretta. However, that was very short-lived and she was engrossed with the sweet dog once more. "You are very kind, miss. Elysia should like that very much." she said. Temperance then stood and brushed herself off. "Are you long in Bath?" asked she, wanting to keep the girl's company for a while longer so Elysia could play with the dog for a bit.

"Yes, my family is here permanently I believe." Patience replied. She sensed thath er company was not highly valued, but she felt that this woman was interesting enough, and like Temperance, Patience wanted to see Loretta and Elysia play a little longer.
"And you? Have you been here long? Are you staying long?" she asked, hoping to recieve a lengthy anser. She saw the sun catch one of the golden curls, and immediately knew that this little child could outshine her already...
It was not a nice thought.

Temperance smiled and nodded as the girl spoke. If they did become friends it was nice to know of someone who was settled permanently. That was of great comfort to her. "My brother and I came to Bath barely two months ago. I can only pray we shall be settled here for quite some time. If at all possible, I should very much like to stay here until the end of my days. You see, my brother and I -- and Elysia, of course -- have scarcely stayed in one place long enough to make any friends. Which I suppose was for the best considering our shortened stay. Oh, listen to me prattling on. You must be bored to death!" It was strange how comfortable she was talking to this girl. Not that she posed any sort of threat in the first place, but it wasn't too often she came across people she was this comfortable with.
