Jeremiah looked up at the Valhurt residence and a sigh escaped his lips, before his eyes travelled downwards to his attire, black as was custom for mourning. Mourning. What a strange word. And yet he and his sister were in fact mourning, mourning the sudden death of their father and brother. Scarlet fever, it had said in the letter. And all of a sudden, Jeremiah found himself a Marquis. He had to say that black suited Anaxandra more than it suited him. Not to mention she seemed to have grown, and pregnancy was making her grumpier than before. He had to talk to the Danton person about having to suffer his sister's tantrums. Wasn't he the father? The young Marquis was lead into the front parlour where he was told to wait for miss Valhurst, which he did, his hands clasped on his back and his eyes fixed upon nothing in particular outside the window.

Upon hearing that her darling was down in the parlour, Helizabel gave a small squeak of delight and ran downstairs. She wore a pretty ruffled gown of white watered silk, her chestnut hair bouncing down her back in scented waves as she entered the room. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw that her Jeremiah was dressed in black. "Dearest?" she asked in a small voice, coming over to him.

Her voice, her sweet voice, woke Jeremiah from his reverie and he looked down to Helizabel, a trace of a smile upon his lips. He wished for nothing more than to crush her against him, but he wanted her reputation to remain intact. Besides, he was supposed to be mourning. In truth, all that had happened during the last month or so had left him confused and feeling entirely helpless. He reached out with one hand and caress her cheek before placing a swift, tender kiss upon her forehead, and looking down, taking her hand in hers. "They're gone, Helizabel," he finally said, looking into her eyes again, "my father...my elder brother...they're dead. A letter arrived yestereve. Anaxandra is devastated, I haven't seen her cry so much. And me...I..." He broke off and shook his head, passing a hand over his forehead.

Helizabel paled at the look on his face, his eyes seemed to be twice his age with grief. She gasped at his words and hastily turned him to her and wrapped her slender arms about him, resting her cheek against his heart, "Oh my poor love! I cannot tell you how sorry I am! Is there anything I can do to help you or Anaxandra?" she asked, looking up at him, her golden green eyes filled with concern as she stroked his arms, trying to soothe him as best as she could.

Jeremiah felt his walls shudder around him, the walls that kept his emotions at bay. His arms wrapped around Helizabel and he held her, fast and close to his heart. It felt good, knowing he was needed somewhere. That he was loved. He had no idea how to help Ana - and one look from her red-rimmed emerald eyes made him flee her side, like a coward. He could not face this just yet - he was so young...too young. "Hold me," he whispered, hoarsely to Helizabel, "don't let me go...please..." and then his voice broke and he hid his face into her sweet-scented hair, bitting his lip to not sob out loud.

Helizabel did as he asked, holding him tightly to her, stroking his back and his long brown hair, she kissed his cheek and hummed an old lullaby she had learned as a child, it was a weak, watery sound, but her heart was wrenched to hear her beloved so upset. "It is alright my love, there is no need to pretend or to be strong for me...I am here for you, and I always will be..." she murmured, holding him as close as she possibly could so that their hearts beat side by side.

Her closeness and comforting words made him feel only slightly better, for the full extent of what had just happened came crashing down onto Jeremiah. He guided them both to a chair where he sat down and pulled Helizabel onto his lap, not caring for propriety at the moment, hiding his face in the crook of her neck, his arms wrapped around her securely. "I haven't seen my father or brother since we all left for the front, when I left for Spain," he said in a dull voice, "and now they're dead. They're dead...I feel so lost..." and he sobbed, his body shaking with grief and sorrow.

Helizabel's mind was reeling from what he had just told her, he was now a marquis, he would have to sell his commission and stay at home- with her. A guilty joy flooded through her but she hastily swatted it away as Jeremiah's despairing words reached her and she stroked his hair and held him close to her breast as a mother might comfort a small child who has just suffered a night mare. "Shh...my love...'twill be alright...eventually, just don't forget them, and don't glorify their memories, you cannot live in the past, you must look to the future and make them proud...I will be right beside you all the way." She rested her cheek on his shoulder and let her tears mingle with his.

Jeremiah inhaled her scent deeply, it comforted him, and soon he calmed down enough to simply rest his head against her warm skin, eyes closed, listening to her heartbeat. It beat in union with his own. Slowly, he drew back and lfited Helizabel's chin to look into her beautiful eyes. "I love you," he murmured, "and I know my father would have loved you a well. He had always hoped I would find the woman of my dreams..." he trailed off and tenderly placed his lips across Helizabel's own in a kiss, before resting his forehead against hers, a pained sigh escaping him.

Helizabel smiled at his words and stroked his cheek, kissing away his tears before his lips met hers and she clung to him, wrapping her arms around him and willingly parted her innocent mouth in order to offer him further comfort. She felt so useless, she did not know how to best comfort him and so offered what she could. Her own mother had died when she was too young to know what grief was and so felt sad that she could not offer him the comfort of knowing his situation.

Jeremiah felt life flicker through the ashes of his soul, fire starting anew, and it was fueled purely by his love for Helizabel, and her innocent trust in him, in the way she offered him what she could. He moaned ever so softly before breaking off the kiss before it got the better of him, taking a deep breath. "If I do not stop now I fear I shall damage your reputation - badly," he said, meeting her eyes with a rueful smile, his hand caressing her cheek. "But I am glad you are by my side in this, Helizabel. You do not know how glad I am.."

Helizabel whimpered as the kiss was broken but understood vaguely that it was for her own good. She smiled softly at his words, her eyes shining with love as she wiped his tears away, "Whatever I can do to help, you know I will, let me come to the funeral with you and stand by your side. Let your pain be my pain and your grief become mine." She kissed his forehead before rising up from his lap and saying, "By the way, I have a belated Christmas present for you..." And she went to a drawer and pulled out a blue and gold bound book of Keats, to remind him of their days of courtship.

Jeremiah smiled, cupping her cheek gently and planting a kiss to her forehead. "My sweet nymph...to have you by my side at the funeral shall mean the greatest source of strength," he said gently, before watching her move across the room, admiring the sway of her body before reprimanding himself. His eyes lit up when he saw the book and he smiled broadly. "Thank you, my darling - I shall treasure it forever." Then he carefully placed the book away and reached into his pocket, producing a small velvet box. "I have a belated Christmas gift for you as well," he said with a rather shy smile. Inside the box was a beautiful ring.

Helizabel gave a small giggle, delighted that he loved the gift and promised to read some out to him later. Then it was his turn to give her a present and her eyes widened when she saw what it was. A ring of such beauty could only mean one thing and her hands trembled, her cheeks were flushed as she looked up at him, "Oh! Jeremiah- i-it's beautiful...does this mean t-that...." She dared not finish the sentence.

He watched her reaction and could not help but smile, a handsome smile, his eyes twinkling up into hers with love and warm affection. "Oh you better believe it, it means just what you are thinking, that is, if you're thinking the same as me," he commented, before his smile grew softer and he lowered himself down onto one knee, looking up at Helizabel. He could never love any other as he loved her now, she was his one and only, his nymph, his saviour, his beautiful Euridice. "Will you have me as your husband, Helizabel?" he asked softly, and his voice trembled ever so slightly.

Helizabel looked down at him and another tear fell from her eyes as she nodded her head slowly and said in a choked voice, "Of course I will! I could not imagine spending my life with any other! Oh Jeremiah! It was you and it will always be you, you are the one for me and no one else!" She held out her hand, to allow him to slide the ring on.

Jeremiah's smile broadened visibly and he gently took hold of her hand and slid the ring onto her finger, before kissing her knuckles and standing up again. He gathered her close to him, and kissed her lips passionately, forgetting that he was supposed to hold back a bit, so joyful was he. "Oh Helizabel," he murmured, resting his forehead against hers, "I cannot imagine life without you anymore...I promise to protect you and care for you. You shall have whatever you wish for my darling, and I promise to make you as happy as you can be."
