It was about ten of the clock at night when Walcot church slowly began to fill with about ten or so guests for a small, clandestine marriage. But it was one of love and purity. The church was little decorated, but what was there was elegant and almost joyful. The altar was covered in vases of green fronds, ferns and pale green-yellow spring roses and carnations. The candles at the altar were silver and standing before them- or rather pacing was a very nervous groom-to-be. Dressed in a dark spring green satin striped jacket and cream breeches, Phoebus was running his hands through his deep golden hair. This reminded him too much of his first marriage, one that had ended in hate and death. He swallowed back panic and thought of Anaxandra, the only woman he had ever wanted to marry and wanted to spend the rest of his life with. She was worth it.

The Duchess lifted her eyes as the carriage stopped in front of the church, a smile forming upon her lips, and she could almost imagine her heart calling out to Phoebus' own. Even though this was a small marriage, much smaller than her first one to sir Edward, she did not care. What mattered most to her was that this was a marriage of love. The Duchess wore a simple yet elegant white gown, which fit her maternal figure nicely. With a smile she placed a hand over her swollen stomach - the babe slept, giving the mother some much needed peace. Over her face came a veil, and in her hands she held a simply bouquet that resembled the very essence of spring. Her bridesmaids, Kitty and Helizabel, wore matching gowns and carried similar bouquets to the bride's. Inside, Jeremiah smiled, shaking his head at Phoebus, standing tall and straight in his army uniform, although he was no longer a soldier.

Helizabel giggled excitedly, smoothing out her pale apple green silk skirts, covered in lacey muslin, she wore a matching green velvet short cape over the top to protect her from the cold and looked down at her bouquet of snow drops, blossom and ivy, deciding which flower to give to her beloved to put in his button hole. "You look incomparably beautiful, Ana," she said to the bride,"I don't think I have ever seen a more beautiful bride." She got out of the carriage and offer up her free hand to aid the bride out. Phoebus himself had designed her gown and bouquet, it was very clever indeed, for the bouquet was very large and the dress very loose and combined with the veil, who would have to watch very closely to know she was pregnant at all.
Inside the curate informed the groom that the bride had arrived and he went the same shade as his jacket. He wasn't good enough for her, he'd never be able to make her truly happy...but he still loved her enough to stand his ground and not throw up into the altar decorations.

Kitty smiled at Helizabel's enthusiasm and climbed out after the younger girl, taking the bouquet from Anaxandra so she would be able to get out of the carriage safely. The companion did everything she could to make life easier for her lady. The lady in question giggled as well, and, taking Helizabel's hand while making certain she wouldn't trip over the hem of her skirt, exited the carriage. "Thank you, Heli - you look quite stunning yourself! I think Jeremiah will fall off his dreamcloud when he sees you!" Kitty laughed and shook her head: "Come, my lady, we must not leave sir Danton waiting!"
Inside, Jeremiah stepped to Phoebus, briefly placing a hand on his shoulder, smiling in brotherly fashion. "Easy, you don't want my sister seeing you this green," he joked slightly, "she's head over heels in love with you, she would come here tonight even if she were on her deathbed - she's stubborn enough!"

Helizabel went ahead, opened the side chapel doors, where her own father awaited to escort the bride down the aisle, she removed her cloak and turned around to fuss over the bride's skirts and straightened and smoothed them down. Then, she fell back with Kitty to hold the bride's train as her father kissed the bride's hand, smiled proudly down at her as if she was his own daughter and the chapel doors opened and the soft organ music began to play.
Phoebus paled when Jeremiah mentioned deathbed. "Deathbed? What? Is she sick? Is our baby alright? Tell me!" He shook his soon to be brother-in-law's shoulders, but then the bridal anthem started and he jumped around to face the back of the church, not wishing to waste another moment, not when his bride was so near by.

Kitty returned Ana's bouquet and smiled, kissing her lady on both cheeks. The Duchess looked to Helizabel's father with sparkling emerald orbs from under the veil, whispering a 'thank you' - it meant so much to her that he was doing her the honour of walking her down the aisle, since her own father was not here. A pang of sadness crossed her thought, but she dismissed it, instead looking ahead to where her dreams and hopes waited, embodied in the form of Phoebus Danton, and her heart fluttered inside her chest.
Jeremiah rolled his eyes and had half a mind to knock some sense into Phoebus. "She's fine, you lovesick fool!" he murmured, before a grin split his features as the bridal anthem began to play and he turned around to see his sister coming on the arm of sir Valhurst. Jeremiah's eyes sought Helizabel out and his smile softened - she was so beautiful.

Phoebus felt his heart stop beating, the air reduce in his lungs for nearly half a minute when he first saw her coming towards him and had to grip the pew in front of him to stop him falling to his knees in awe of such radiant beauty. She looked...heavenly. Like the embodiment of winter itself, her ripe belly hailing the coming of spring. Suddenly, all nerves were gone and he was himself again, straightening, he smiled lovingly at her as she drew closer and closer. Soon Valhurst placed her hand in his and he murmured, "I thought this moment would never come...you look..." He stopped and shook his head dazedly for he could not find the words. Behind the bride, Helizabel blushed and smiled at Jeremiah's admiring glances and gave him a snow drop secretly.

Anaxandra's heart thundered away madly in her chest as Valhurst lead her closer and closer to the one she loved most in this world, and when her hand was finally in Phoebus', she could feel tears of joy in her eyes, which she hastily blinked away. "I love you," she whispered to her one true love, before turning to lok at the vicar. Beside Phoebus, Jeremiah sent a wink in Helizabel's direction when no one was looking (the no one being, respectively, her father), and tucked the snow drop safelly into his button hole, smoothing his fingers over it, before turning his attention to the vicar.
"DEARLY beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God, and in the face of this congregation, to join together this man and this woman in holy Matrimony; which is an honourable estate, instituted of God in the time of man's innocency, signifying unto us the mystical union that is betwixt Christ and his Church; which holy estate Christ adorned and beautified with his presence, and first miracle that he wrought, in Cana of Galilee; and is commended of Saint Paul to be honourable among all men: and therefore is not by any to be enterprized, nor taken in hand, unadvisedly, lightly, or wantonly, to satisfy men's carnal lusts and appetites, like brute beasts that have no understanding; but reverently, discreetly, advisedly, soberly, and in the fear of God; duly considering the causes for which Matrimony was ordained. First, It was ordained for the blessing of children, to be brought up in the fear and nurture of the Lord, and to the praise of his holy Name. Secondly, It was ordained for a remedy against sin, and to avoid fornication; that such persons as have not the gift of continency might marry, and keep themselves undefiled members of Christ's body. Thirdly, It was ordained for the mutual society, help, and comfort, that the one ought to have of the other, both in prosperity and adversity. Into which holy estate these two persons present come now to be joined. Therefore if any man can shew any just cause, why they may not lawfully be joined together, let him now speak, or else hereafter for ever hold his peace."
There was silence, and Anaxandra felt a burden fall off her shoulders.

Phoebus' heart skipped a beat again and he knew that if anybody objected to him marrying his beloved duchess then he would impale them on the altar candlesticks. Silence. Good. The vicar continued, "I REQUIRE and charge you both, as ye will answer at the dreadful day of judgement, when the secrets of all hearts shall be disclosed, that if either of you know any impediment, why ye may not be lawfully joined together in Matrimony, ye do now confess it. For be ye well assured, that so many as are married together otherwise than God's Word doth allow, are not joined together by God; neither is their Matrimony lawful."
Phoebus shook his head, he knew no reason why he should not spend the rest of his life adoring the woman beside him, and making her shame legal and restoring her good name. It had hurt him indeed to only have her as his mistress for so long.

Ana cast her glance in Phoebus' direction from under her veil, her emearld eyes smothering him with the love she felt inside her heart and soul. If anyone would have objected to their marriage, she would have probably throttled them with her own hands. No one was going to stop her from marrying the man she loved. The Duchess shook her head at the vicar's next words, but her eyes remained on Phoebus.
The vicar turned to the groom: "WILT thou have this woman to thy wedded wife, to live together after God's ordinance in the holy estate of Matrimony? Wilt thou love her, comfort her, honour, and keep her, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all other, keep thee only unto her, so long as ye both shall live?"
Ana's heart fluttered at his words - this was the last chance to turn back.

Phoebus did not even hesitate for a moment, he got down on both knees and kissed his bride's hands. "Until the day I die, I will." Then, standing up again, he kept both her hands inside his and beamed down at her with such ardent devotion that some of the young single women in the congregation were jealous. Then the vicar turned to the soon to be ex- duchess and said, " WILT thou have this man to thy wedded husband, to live together after God's ordinance in the holy estate of Matrimony? Wilt thou obey him, and serve him, love, honour, and keep him, in sickness and in health; and, forsaking all other, keep thee only unto him, so long as ye both shall live?"

Anaxandra felt her throat tighten at his words, and a tear escaped dowm her cheek, hidden by the veil. If only she could throw herself into his arms already! But she had to wait, like everyone else. Her voice rang out clear and soft after the vicar's words: "Until the day I die, and beyond that - I will."
The vicar smiled: "Who giveth this woman to be married to this man?"

Phoebus grinned down at her and could not resist kissing her hands again before Valhurst rose, smiled at the couple and said, "I do," before sitting down again and placing a protective hand over his daughter's as he noticed Jeremiah looking at her a little too often. He still hadn't got used to the idea of them being engaged. Then the vicar turned to Phoebus and told him to repeat after him, "I Phoebus Gabriel Danton take thee Anaxandra Isabelle Carstair to my wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I plight thee my troth." He repeated the words with the confidence that love gave him.

Anaxandra felt blush rising in her cheeks as he kissed her hands again, and she smiled brightly up at him through he veil, taking her eyes off him but for a moment to look at Valhurst in thanks. Then her attention was once more upon her soon to be husband, and when the vicar made her repeat the words which had just been said, she did so in a strong voice filled with love: "I, Anaxandra Isabelle Carstair take thee Phoebus Gabriel Danton, to my wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, cherish, and to obey, till death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I give thee my troth."
The vicar smiled and turned to Phoebus then, asking him for the rings.

Phoebus turned to Jeremiah and took the rings from him, putting them on the golden platter, he took the one up that he had had spesfically made for his bride. It was silver and showed two hands holding an emerald heart with a crown over it- to show that she was the queen of his, he slid it onto her finger, saying, "WITH this Ring I thee wed, with my worldly goods I thee endow: and by this our Marriage we become One according to God's holy institution. And this I declare in the presence of Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen."

Jeremiah smiled at Phoebus, before casting his glance towards Helizabel again, and her father as well. Someday soon, he would be exchanging wovs with the woman he loved. His attention turned back to the wedding at hand. Anaxandra gasped slightly at the beauty of the ring, and she blinked another tear away rather furiously. Then, with a slightly shaking hand, she took her own ring from the plate - it was rather symbolic as well, a golden ring with an opal set into it, the opal deciping fire, colours mixing and dancing over it - the fire which Phoebus had awoken in her, the spring he had brought.
"WITH this Ring I thee wed and by this our Marriage we become One according to God's holy institution. And this I declare in the presence of Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen."

Phoebus stroked the ring, admiring the colours and nodding as he understood its significance, lifting his gaze to his love's face and grinning blissfully at her as the vicar said, "O ETERNAL God, Creator and Preserver of all mankind, Giver of all spiritual grace, the Author of everlasting life: Send thy blessing upon these thy servants, this man and this woman, whom we bless in thy Name; that, as Isaac and Rebecca lived faithfully together, so these persons may surely perform and keep the vow and covenant betwixt them made, and may ever remain in perfect love and peace together, and live according to thy laws; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Those whom God hath joined together let no man put asunder. I now pronounce you man and wife, you may kiss the bride." Phoebus certainly didn't need a vicar to tell him what to do, he gathered his new wife tenderly close and kissed her briefly yet lovingly on the lips, too embarrassed to do more in public and wanting to have her all to himself again.

Anaxandra smiled up at her husband - how wonderful it was to know these words were now true! She closed her eyes as he kissed her, her heart fluttering away happily inside her chest, and she wanted nothing more than to have him all to herself again. The smile she granted him when they parted was the most beautiful one she possessed, and could have melted any ice that stood in its path. Kitty wiped away a tear of joy, while Jeremiah stepped forward to hug his sister affectionately and clasp hands with Phoebus, his new brother-in-law - who, as has to be noted, he liked far more than the first one, but that was beyond the point anway.

Phoebus grinned and forced himself to stay and be polite and accept all their congratulations before he took his bride's hand and slipped back down the aisle with her. His heart felt as if it would explode with joy, she had made the happiest of men! He felt as though his head was no longer connected to his neck but floated up in the clouds. He guided her out into the carriage waiting for them and gathered her properly into his arms, kissing her with all the love and passion that he possessed as their carriage began to head to their now shared home...
